The Three Stages of Hair Growth: Why Your Follicles Get Stuck (and How to Reset Them)

When clients come to my clinic concerned about thinning hair, loss of length, or sudden shedding, they often assume something is wrong with the hair shaft itself. But as a trichologist, I always shift the focus back to where the magic actually happens: the hair growth cycle.
Every single hair on your head operates on an independent biological clock. When that clock is running smoothly, you enjoy consistent density and length. However, when systemic stress, hormonal shifts, or poor scalp health disrupt this clock, your follicles can get "stuck" in the wrong phase.
Understanding how these cycles work—and how to kickstart a stalled follicle—is the secret to long-term hair health.
The 3 Primary Stages of the Hair Cycle
The hair growth cycle is broken down into three distinct phases: Anagen, Catagen, and Telogen.
1. The Anagen Phase (The Growth Phase)
How Long It Lasts: 2 to 7 years (genetically determined).
What Happens: This is the active building phase. Matrix cells within the follicle divide rapidly, producing new hair shaft material. At any given moment, 85% to 90% of the healthy hair on your head should be in the Anagen phase. The length of your Anagen phase dictates your "terminal length"—meaning how long your hair can physically grow before falling out naturally.
2. The Catagen Phase (The Transition Phase)
How Long It Lasts: 2 to 3 weeks.
What Happens: This is a brief structural reset. The hair stops growing, the outer root sheath shrinks, and the follicle detaches from its dermal papilla (its primary blood and nutrient supply). The hair turns into what we call a "club hair" as it prepares to rest. Only 1% to 2% of your hair is in Catagen at any time.
3. The Telogen Phase (The Resting & Shedding Phase)
How Long It Lasts: 3 to 4 months.
What Happens: The follicle rests while a new hair begins forming underneath the club hair. Eventually, the old strand releases and sheds (accounting for your normal 50–100 strands per day), making way for the new Anagen strand. Roughly 10% to 15% of your hair sits in Telogen normally.
How Hair Gets "Stuck" in Different Cycles
When your follicle's internal clock gets thrown off, hair health stalls. Here is how your hair gets trapped in undesirable phases:
Problem 1: Truncated Anagen (Hair "Stops Growing")
What Happens: Instead of staying in the growth phase for 4 to 5 years, the follicle prematurely cuts Anagen short—sometimes after just a few months or a year.
The Cause: High levels of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), localized scalp inflammation, or chronic oxidative stress cause the follicle to miniaturize over time, shortening each progressive growth phase.
The Result: Your hair feels like it hits a "growth ceiling" and refuses to get past your shoulders, becoming finer and weaker with each cycle.
Problem 2: Stuck in Telogen (Telogen Effluvium)
What Happens: A sudden shock forces a massive percentage of active Anagen hairs to abruptly jump into the Telogen phase all at once.
The Cause: Severe emotional stress, high fever/illness, sudden dietary drops, hormonal fluctuations (like postpartum estrogen crashes), or low ferritin (stored iron) levels.
The Result: About 2 to 3 months after the trigger, you experience heavy, alarming diffuse shedding as all those shifted hairs release at the same time.
Problem 3: Dormant/Extended Telogen (Failure to Re-enter Anagen)
What Happens: Once the old hair sheds, the follicle rests... and then refuses to wake back up. It enters an extended dormant state rather than immediately starting a new Anagen strand.
The Cause: Poor microcirculation, cellular energy depletion, or chronic perifollicular inflammation surrounding the stem cell niche.
The Result: Overall scalp transparency and a gradual loss of hair density.
How to Reset Your Follicles and Re-Enter Anagen
The good news? Follicles are remarkably resilient. You can encourage a "stuck" follicle to re-enter a healthy Anagen phase with a targeted approach:
1. Clear the "Root Blockades"
Micro-inflammation caused by oxidized sebum buildup, yeast imbalance (Malassezia), or heavy product residue starves the follicle entrance. Maintain a consistent wash schedule using a pH-balanced cleanser to protect the follicle stem cells from environmental and biological stress.
2. Fuel the Matrix Cells
Cells in the hair matrix are among the fastest-dividing cells in the human body, requiring a constant influx of energy.
Ensure your ferritin (iron stores) levels are optimal (trichologists generally look for levels above 50–70 ng/mL for growth support).
Maintain adequate dietary protein intake and essential micronutrients like Vitamin D and Zinc.
3. Stimulate Microcirculation & Cellular Signal Paths
To coax dormant follicles back into active Anagen, you need to boost blood flow to the dermal papilla:
Scalp Massage: Daily, gentle mechanical stimulation using your fingertips helps encourage blood flow to dormant roots.
Topical Actives: Ingredients like caffeine, peptides, and botanical antioxidants help counteract localized oxidative stress and signal the follicle matrix to begin a new growth cycle.
Why Understanding Your Cycle is Your Ultimate Next Step
At the end of the day, your hair isn't just "falling out" or "refusing to grow" at random—it is giving you direct feedback about what is happening beneath the surface. Identifying which phase your hair is currently stuck in is the single most important step in choosing the right path forward. If your hair is stuck in a shortened Anagen phase, throwing heavy anti-shedding products at it won't yield results; you need follicle-energizing and anti-miniaturization support. Conversely, if you are experiencing a sudden Telogen flush, your focus must shift toward internal nutrition, stress management, and gentle scalp care to allow the cycle to self-correct. By paying attention to these biological signals rather than guessing with quick fixes, you can give your scalp the exact targeted care it needs to rebuild density, restore length, and thrive for the long haul.
